St George Leagues Club will sponsor the St George Relay for Life, a fund raising event for the NSW Cancer Council to be held at Oki-Jubilee on 18 and 19 November 2005 and we hope members will get behind this very worthy cause.
Relay For Life is a team event to raise funds for The Cancer Council. It is a fun, outdoor and overnight fundraising event where teams of 10 to 15 people take turns to walk or run around Oki-Jubilee oval, Kogarah. The Relay will run for 18 hours.
A local committee has been created to promote Relay in the St George area and encourage participation and organise many of the logistical elements.
Teams are usually motivated to join in by a friend or family member touched by cancer. Many teams give their team a special name or theme and will camp out in decorated tents pitched next to the track.
There are two important highlights:
- Opening ceremony and Survivors Walk - cancer survivors and their carers are celebrated during the first lap
- Candlelight ceremony - held just after sunset, this is a time to light a candle and remember someone who has passed away from cancer or support someone who is fighting cancer.
