St George Leagues Club has implemented a water-harvesting program to conserve water at its Kogarah premises.
The conservation initiative emerged out of adversity - when a pump failure in the basement car park saw the area flooded with water from a leaking pipe.
This prompted the idea of utilising ground water from beneath the area to water the club's sprawling gardens.
"With that pump failing it just overflowed and kept coming up onto the car park," Chief Engineer Kim gardens and realised we had a water source there that we could capture or harvest.
"We decided to put the water into tanks and then use it to irrigate or water the rest of our gardens.
" Mr Finigan said development of the system would be complete by the time The Journal reaches members.
"The pumps have been installed at the moment and they are just pumping through the stormwater and pipe work which will feed to the holding centre," he said a few weeks before deadline, looking forward to a summer free of water restrictions.
"We will be able to water our gardens at any time, and not be bound by water restrictions in terms of garden watering.
" The project cost about $25,000.
