The Osteoporosis Sydney Support Group celebrated its 10th birthday at St George Leagues Club in August.
Marking a milestone in local health, patients and carers toasted a decade of support for the disease which afflicts one in two women and one in three men aged 60 and older.
Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolic Bone Disease Terry Diamond established the OSSG in 1995 to fight the problem that makes old bones brittle.
"I established it to provide medically diagnosed osteoporosis not only with educational support but with interactive support as well," he said. "Ten years down the track the group has more than 600 male and female members from all over Sydney and membership numbers are continually growing."
OSSG hosts weekly exercise classes including resistance and yoga at St George Leagues Club in the Heritage or Mahogany rooms.
The registered charity operates from St George Hospital where research is conducted into the management and treatment of the disease.
OSSG also offers a six-week interactive educational support program run by qualified physiotherapists.
Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter and attend lectures and information sessions conducted by various health specialists.
"The Group would like to give a special thanks to Yvonne Clark and Lily Vella for their ongoing support and friendly manner," Professor Diamond said.
"They have met all of our requests throughout our ten-year relationship with the Club."
