MEMBER No.199 Laurie Rawle received the Medal of the Order of Australia from her Excellency the Governor of NSW Marie Bashir at Government House in May.
The World War Two veteran was awarded the honour for a long record of community service that he has continued despite losing his eyesight in 1994.
Mr Rawle has served the RAAF, Engadine Rotary, Police Boys, the Rural Fire Brigade and various other community groups throughout his 82 years.
"It was a shock," Mr Rawle told the Journal. "I had to think about what I had been involved in - I'm a person who sees things that need to be done and get into and when it's done, someone else can run it."
Since moving to Shoalhaven Heads a few years ago, the former real estate agent has assisted the Rural Fire Brigade with maintenance and fundraising duties and organised a blind bowlers teaching day.
Mr Rawle was present at the Club's first annual General Meeting more than 50 years ago. |
