Tony Pearson was crowned St George Leagues Employee of the Year for 2006 at the Club's annual presentation night in December.
Mr Pearson, an employee for the past two years, was rewarded for his outstanding customer service and indefatigable work ethic behind the bar. "I felt elated and privileged," Mr Pearson said, after learning he had won the award. The 59-year-old casual bar attendant believes his attention to detail was what separated him from his workmates. "I do the job and I do not argue," the Beverly Park resident explained. "I know the job well as I have been in the game for a while." With more than 18 years of experience as a barman, fellow staff members are appreciative of the knowledge Mr Pearson can divulge. Chris O'Keefe, 18, is just one of many staff who have benefited from Mr Pearson's tutelage. "Tony's experience is obvious when behind the bar or in the cafe," Mr O'Keefe praised. "When I was in my training period he made learning the ropes a fair bit easier for me." Human Resources Manager Joni Deibert said Mr Pearson was a popular choice as employee of the year. "He was a very popular choice, which was confirmed by the applause from staff, supervisors and managers when the announcement was made at our staff Christmas party in December," she said. "He is a reliable and efficient worker - he doesn't stand around, he is constantly finding work to do. Tony has helped us out on so many occasions by coming in to work at short notice, to cover a shift. He is a quiet achiever and a valuable employee." Having witnessed the Dragons' record-breaking 11 premierships, Mr Pearson has met a number of his teenage idols while on duty. "Seeing all the old stars from the 1960s when they have reunions is a bit of a buzz," he told the Journal. "It is good to see Billy Smith - he was a hero of mine." Mr Pearson also keeps himself busy at home investigating his own heritage. "I am researching my family history at the moment and I like to do a bit of gardening,'' said the proud patriarch of six grandchildren. |
