This year two outstanding young women have won the Club's annual bursaries for tertiary education, after no young men were nominated for the scholarships.
Mosman teenager ALEXANDRA McCAUGHAN won the annual scholarship after scoring a University Admission Index score of 98.40, emulating her sister's reward for hard work two years ago. "I did not think I would score that high,'' Alexandra, 18, said. "I was very happy and very surprised." "Thank you very much for the opportunity and I promise I will make the most of it." The Loreto Kirribilli student will be attending her first lectures of a Science-Law degree at the University of Sydney when the Journal is arriving in mailboxes. Alexandra's sister, Georgia, is currently following their father, Dr Brian McCaughan, a cardiac thoracic surgeon and Leagues Club member, into medicine via the University of Sydney.
ELIZABETH NGUYEN scored a remarkable UAI of 99.40 to also win a Baden Wales Bursary. The Dolls Point teenager has begun Pharmacy at the University of Sydney where, upon graduation, she hopes to study medicine as a post-graduate student. She attributes her academic success to consistent effort and NSW's leading high school. "I was a bit surprised (with my score)," said the former James Ruse Agricultural High School student, who was nominated by her mother and club member Margaret Nguyen. "I was expecting around 98-ish, but I have got a pretty competitive school." Elizabeth, 17, said the $1500 annual bursarymeans she will not have to lean so heavily on her parents. |
