GIRL POWER has hit the cricket scene in St George for a six with the establishment of the first girls-only club team in the district. The St George Leagues Cricket Club has registered an Under-14 all girls cricket team in the new Sydney Rivers Girls Cricket Association.
In a historic move, this will give the girls their first chance ever to form their own team other than at representative level.
Denis King, Secretary of the St George Leagues Cricket Club, said the new team would enable the girls to fully express themselves on the cricket pitch.
"Until now, girls had to play in the boys' teams and while everyone involved did their best to ensure it was a good experience for everyone, sometimes the girls were left a little on the outer," Denis says.
"Some of the girls playing in mixed sides in the junior clubs feel they are just not getting all the opportunities they should.
We hear stories of girls who try to give a high five if the team takes a wicket or fields well, and the boys just turn away.
It makes the girls feel like they are not part of the team.

"It's not all the boys and it's not all the girls, but there was enough of a problem that we felt there would definitely be strong interest if we started up an all girls team.
"We have had calls from people who are really happy and they say they had no idea there was a girls' side and they want to be involved.
We hope to have enough girls register so we can have an Under 10 team next year." The new Sydney Rivers Girls Cricket Association covers the Sydney metropolitan area and includes the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Canterbury / Bankstown, Sutherland & St.George.
Denis concludes: "The competition was started by some truly dedicated people from these associations who had a vision to have girls play in their own gender teams which I think may be a first for the Metro Area (excluding Representative Teams)."
The Competition is open to girls under 10 to under 14 years, with hours of play on Saturday afternoons from 2.30pm to 5.00pm.
Play will take place at Ashfield Park, Ashfield; St.
Lukes Oval, Concord; Kirrawee Oval, Kirrawee; and Scarborough Park wickets 1 & 2, Monterey.
