The last several months have seen the completion of two major tournaments at St George Chess Club, as well as the traditional yearly match up with the North Sydney Chess Club.
The St George Swiss was won by Hani Malik, with a score of 8/9. Hani was on 8/8 with one round to go and it seemed he would make it a clean sweep, but he was upset by Sean Watharow, who had undertaken extensive opening preparation for the game. Special thanks to Aina Musaeva for running the tournament - it was her first time as director of play and she did an excellent job. North Sydney came to St George with the scores level after St George did well at North Sydney earlier in the year. However, North Sydney did not bring enough strong players with them on the return leg and were comfortably defeated by 10 games. Recently the St George Summer Open was won by Jamie Roberts with a score of 6/7. The last round was all set up for fireworks, with four people in the running for first place: Angelito Camer and Hani Malik, both on five points, were playing on board two and Jamie Roberts and Henk Jens were playing on board one, on 5.5 and five points respectively. However, Angelito and Hani agreed to an early draw, leaving Jamie only needing a draw to win the tournament, which he secured. No fireworks in the end. I would also like to note the excellent performance of Cedric Koh, our youngest member - only 8 years old - who scored a remarkable 4.5/7, defeating two strong players and drawing against two others. Cedric Koh and his sister Clarise Koh also recently competed in the Australian Junior Chess Championships. Clarise is now the girls under-10 champion of Australia. May all your pawns become queens.
