FORMER Jannali High School student Michael Romei scored a near perfect mark in the HSC to win this year's Baden Wales Scholarship.
Romei's 99 out of 100 made him eligible for Journalism Law at the University of Technology, Sydney, where he is currently enjoying his first taste of University life.
"I had to work pretty hard but I really wanted to get into the uni course I had my heart set on," he said after enrolling in February.
"I thought English was my best subject, but when the ancient history results came out I came third in the state and 10th in society and culture.
" The Oatley teenager says he has always been a history buff and particularly enjoys reading up on English monarchs.
"I used to read a lot of it when I was in primary school because my sister did it in high school," he said.
"I find Henry VIII and Mary I the most interesting: she burnt all the heretics - quite a charming woman.

HURSTVILLE student Dawn Tan found the right balance of sport, religion and study to score an outstanding University Admission Index of 97.
"I managed to balance it with other stuff out of school like youth group," said the parishioner of Hurstville's Revival Life Centre.
Dawn, daughter of club members Choo Yee and Florence Tan, is now studying a double degree in nutrition and sports exercise at the University of Sydney.
"I'm looking forward to meeting new people," she told The Journal.
"I'm also looking forward to doing what I want to do, getting to actually direct my career and becoming something - as opposed to school, where I did whatever to get through.
" After five years of tertiary study, the former state swimmer hopes to help sportsmen and women achieve their best.
"I want to eventually open my own business doing nutrition and look to work with sports people, but there's not that many jobs out there.
" Tan works part-time at an aquatic centre and enjoys regular games of Aus-Tag and netball. |
